Game of the Day: Mirror’s Edge

Game of the Day: Mirror’s Edge

Mirror’s Edge pulls players into a world of 1st person free running where the city is your playground.

What brought me back after playing it last year was the fact that Mirror’s Edge is an extremely innovative game. It’s in a 1st person perspective, so the player is playing the game through the eyes of the heroine Faith, and whatever she sees, you see, which involves the gamer to a much greater degree than would a 3rd person view. The main element of the game is free running, which I have seen few games in that genre; couple that with the 1st person view and you have a game that is gratifying in gameplay as well as visuals. The city of Mirror’s Edge looks great; the urban sprawl is clean and mainly white with blue scaffolding, red pipes and cranes, and yellow paint, it very much looks like a playground, which is what it is to Faith.

Faith doesn’t have any superhuman abilities aside from being a skilled free runner, so navigating rooftops, running from helicoptors and police, or finding an escape route are as fun as they are challenging. The game really requires more input and strategy from the player to successful navigate areas and find your way out of dangerous situations. The story does just enough to keep the gamer intrigued: a politician is murdered and Faith’s sister, a cop, is framed, Faith uses her free running abilities to uncover the conspiracy and corruption that plagues the city and bring justice to the real murderer.

Where Mirror’s Edge shines is gameplay: Faith’s movements are fluid and intuitive and exploring the beautifully detailed areas are fun to explore. I highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a fresh gaming experience.
