For me, this was the game that started my love for the Harvest Moon series. The N64 version took Harvest Moon into colorful 3D and had so many elements that may sound mundane but are surprisingly addictive.
I was in middle school when I first saw the screenshots for the upcoming game called Harvest Moon and I was instantly intrigued. There was no combat, there were no enemies except for maybe bad weather and the purpose of the game was to grow crops and raise animals all the while finding a wife and exploring the area with all its inhabitants. Harvest Moon is by far the most unique gaming experience out there because it sounds like it would be boring, but it never is and I can find myself spending hours and hours doing the same thing each day in the game just to get things like a kitchen constructed for my house or see what the next festival is going to be.
You may not think Harvest Moon is a game you would enjoy, but you’d be surprised by it and the sheer number of things to do in the game. Crops and animals are just a small portion of the game, you can get recipes, go to festivals, race your dog and horse, add extensions to your house, mine in the cave, find power berries, get married and become friends with the locals to unlock items and cut scenes.
There seems to be a cult following with the Harvest Moon games; while I don’t know many people who play them, they seem to be popular enough to warrant continuing the series with some good games and others not so good, but I’m glad it’s still going and I always like checking out the latest Harvest Moon game, whether it’s on the Wii, the DS, or the N64.
