Game of the Day: Pilot Wings 64

Game of the Day: Pilot Wings 64

Pilot Wings is a quaint little game that seems to be the user friendly version of Flight Simulator, all the while being great fun that’s easy to pick up and play but difficult to put down.

When I first saw Pilot Wings back in the mid 1990s, I thought it was for Super Nintendo and marveled at the graphical improvement of SNES games. I had no idea that Nintendo was about to release the N64, so my goal was to procure the system and get Pilot Wings. Like other games on the N64: Starfox, Mario Kart, there was a previous version of it on the SNES that didn’t get much attention, mainly because Pilot Wings 64 blew it out of the water.

The goal in the game is to fly through rings in a certain order in a timely manner and execute a solid landing on either a runway or launch pad. The areas were beautifully designed with sunny beach resorts dotting the coastline, magestic stone castles in the mountains, and even United States landmarks like Mount Rushmore and Cape Canaveral.

Beating scenerios and doing well enough on the objectives unlocks more levels, new game modes like free flight, and alternate methods of transportation like birdman and bounce shoes. Do yourself and favor and dust off that N64 that still has Goldeneye in it and jam in Pilot Wings; because while the N64 and a short life span, Pilot Wings remains a timeless classic.
