A Little Competition Goes A Long Way

Rivalry exists in all areas of life, whether it be Duke vs UNC, Burger King vs McDonald’s, or Facebook vs MySpace. The gaming world is no exception and a rivalry that existed since 2001 with the release of the XBOX has practically divided the world into Sony or Microsoft loyalists. But if we can all get past the hatred we have for the other company and its fanboys, we can see that competition is healthy and it inspires companies to new explore levels of technology out of fear, if anything else. This idea of good competition became especially apparent to me after digesting the information released during E3 a few weeks ago. (continue reading…)
Drakensang: The Dark Eye
by Brendan on Jul.01, 2009, under PC

The harbor district of Ferdok has many interesting characters to interact with
Drakensang strengthens my opinion of Western style RPGs and how German developers can really capture the architecture and landscapes exlcusive to Europe. Drakensang sticks closely to the formula that makes RPGs great: the party system, numerous quests, the armor and weapons system, and a hero chosen to save the world. (continue reading…)
Is Bigger Always Better?: Part 2
by Brendan on Jun.30, 2009, under Next Gen Games

I realized something as I was playing inFamous the other day: as I was crawling along buildings and electrically ziplining from area to area, whether it be on the railroad tracks, or the wires connecting buildings, I didn’t care about the city anymore; I merely saw all the buildings, cars, pedestrians and enemies merely as obstacles that were blocking me from my destination. This is a marked distinction from Grand Theft Auto 3, what I argue is the grandfather of modern sandbox games like inFamous, Prototype, the Spiderman series and many more sandbox games.
Sony’s 3 Fatal Flaws
by Brendan on Jun.29, 2009, under Next Gen Games
There are a lot of things in life we like that make us mad; like when our car gets recalled, the new sequel to your favorite movie is bad, or if your role model gets a DUI. Sony is one of those things, having a huge, loyal fan base, Sony does things that makes those people go “What!?!?” and I will name 3 of those things that make us want to pull out our hair. Gothic 3
by Brendan on Jun.28, 2009, under PC

Gothic 3 suffered from being ahead of its time. The game was so large and the graphics were so detailed that few computers at the time could handle it at full capacity. For optimum performance, having a dual core processor was key, but they were still expensive, so Gothic 3 didn’t get the attention it deserved. Today, dual cores and good amounts of ram is commonplace, so enjoying this game is a must for a fan who missed it before.

The Witcher
by Brendan on Jun.26, 2009, under PC

If you’re a fan of role-playing games as much as I am, you often find yourself going through RPG withdrawal, where the current games on the market just aren’t filling that craving. The Witcher is a game based on a series of books written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, which isn’t surprising because the game has a very complex story with well developed characters and flows very much like a book. MMO Picks

For those of you who don’t know what MMO means, it stands for Massively Multiplayer Online and thanks to hits like World of Warcarft and Age of Conan, tons of people are playing online games in one form or another.
I’m a fan of free online games, the thought of being charged about $15 per month is unsettling, especially if I forgot about it. So here are my favorite online games that you don’t have to pay for.
Runes of Magic
This is your standard online RPG. You can create your character around a variety races and classes to choose from and after your character reaches a certain level, you can pick up another support class, like having a warrior mage or a knight priest.

As almost every online RPG, Runes of Magic emphasizes the level grind, but the work is made easier by the availability of a huge number of quests that will keep you very busy. ROM is a standard, but great online game to check out.

This is an ongoing page, so be sure to check back for more recommendations, in the meantime, check out MMOFury to look for more MMOs
Handheld Picks

Arguably the best game on PSP, Crisis Core is a prequel that gives the Final Fantasy fans a refreshing twist by telling the story of Zack Fair, a SOLDIER 1st class who works alongside fellow SOLDIERs Angeal and Sephiroth. The graphics look great, almost PS2 quality, and you know the developers at Square never disappoint when it comes to a deep storyline, this game is no exception and is truly terrific. The cutscenes alone are worth getting the game, especially the fight between Sephiroth and Genesis.

Fallout 3 is any amazing game that any gamer, whether casual or hardcore can enjoy. The graphics are incredible and truly show the power of the next gen consoles and t he sheer size of the area that players can explore is staggering. While some people complained that the main story was too short, there are hundreds of hours that can be spent roaming the lands, fighting raiders, and visiting towns struggling to survive in the Captial Wasteland. Don’t pass this game by if you haven’t played it.
